Better communication with docs can help in reducing antibiotic overuse in kids: Study

A new study suggests that better communication with their health care providers can help parents in reducing unnecessary usage of antibiotics for common childhood illnesses. The study’s authors found that only 4% of parents advised to delay the use of antibiotics for their children’s ear infections, recalled receiving comprehensive advice, including information about the infection, the risks of antibiotics and how to properly care for their children. The research also showed that parents who recalled receiving more detailed explanations from their health care providers were more likely to use antibiotics only if they were truly needed. By waiting to administer antibiotics, parents allow …

Once-a-month diabetes treatment may replace daily insulin jabs

Scientists have developed a technology that may provide weeks of glucose control for diabetes with a single injection, and would be a dramatic improvement over current therapies. In primates, the treatment has been shown to last for weeks, rather than days, researchers at Duke University in the US said. By creating a controlled-release mechanism for a drug and optimising its circulation time in the body, the new biopolymer injection has the potential to replace daily or weekly insulin shots with a once-a-month or twice-a-month treatments for type 2 diabetes, said researchers. Many current treatments for type 2 diabetes use a signalling molecule …

New research identifies gene switch that can stop growth of cancer cells

Scientists have identified genetic switches that can be ‘turned off’ to stop the growth of cancer cells, an advance that paves the way for new therapies against the deadly disease. Researchers from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden found that cancer cells and normal cells use different gene switches in order to regulate cell growth. The removal of a large regulatory region linked to different types of cancer caused a dramatic resistance to tumour formation, but did not affect normal cell growth in mice, researchers found. “Since we find that the growth of normal and cancer cells is driven by different gene switches, we can …
